DISCOVER : "love somebody like you" by joan

If you're a fan of new music at all, you've probably heard of joan.
Arkansas Synth-pop duo Alan Thomas and Steven Rutherford burst onto the scene just a few short months ago with their debut single, "take me on". Since then, the group has been gathering attention from all corners of the internet, being featured on various blogs, Youtube channels, and high traffic Spotify playlists. Last week, they returned with another gem, "love somebody like you".

Being compared by many to the likes of LANY and The 1975, this young group has already got a huge sound. With songwriting skill far beyond their years and a trendy, throwback aesthetic that's easy to get behind, joan is quickly creeping up on the indie pop charts. Self-described on social media as "overalls and electric pianos", the group quite obviously plays on '80s and '90s influences, in their visuals, sound, and themes. The sultry vocals of "love somebody like you" deal with the topic of unrequited love, reminiscent of popular John Hughes films, while atmospheric synths and a boldly memorable chorus make this release feel modern.

At a time where '90s aesthetics are everywhere, and '80s influences are prominent in the alternative universe, joan have certainly risen to the occasion, and the group isn't gathering hype for no reason. "love somebody like you" is catchy, alt-tinged pop music at its best, and if you haven't already heard them everywhere, you need to check joan out now.
