Chicago four-piece Kate Renegade makes a compelling return with sophomore album, New Unquiet Life.

Reminiscent of many 90s alternative rock greats, Kate Renegade is loud, boisterous, and grungy, but with an uncanny ability to capture emotion and provoke thought. Frontwoman Steph Maieritsch's soft yet tenacious voice requires you to listen, while her bandmates Eric Unger, Noah Vandercook, and Bix Trash build a warm home for her vocals out of beautifully textured instrumentals. The Chicago four-piece released their second album last Friday, June 8, and it is a passionate collection of nine carefully crafted tracks which appropriately fit its name. New Unquiet Life is bursting with colour, full of life, and anything but quiet.

Kate Renegade puts forth a swelling, beautiful effort on this record, creating a golden, burning orange collage of sounds. Maieritsch is fiery and sharp at times, yet with an edge of sweet, storytelling ability not unlike that of 70s rock, while critical and honest lyrics give her a 90s overtone. "Untitled" opens New Unquiet Life in a big way, as Maieritsch demands, "Give me what I want / Give me what I want" through the whirlwind of heavy bass and drums. Along a similar vein is "Bow & Arrow", endlessly fun with a bouncy punk energy, while hosting thoughtful remarks like "I am hard and I am tired of changing anymore" and "Let her roll, let her breathe, let her start to grow". New Unquiet Life also presents a great deal of intimacy, in tracks like "Me to You" and "Friends". Haunting harmonies amplify the brewing storm of emotion, while memorable guitar lines add warmth, and the ever-present rhythm section ties it all together. The instrumental arrangements on this record feel like they exist in a world much larger than the mere three minutes of each song. The whole album is a nostalgic, tangible memory, looking back on life in all its glory. "Gymnast" fights for what this band is all about, as Maieritsch sings, "Try and listen to me now". Kate Renegade have a lot to say, and they need to be heard.

The best music is made out of real, true life, and New Unquiet Life is an outstanding testament to that. New Unquiet Life is a reminder that the world will keep spinning.
