The California indie rockers make a huge return in last week's new single, as they deal with childhood and upgrade their iconic sound.
In their first release since their 2016 sophomore LP, Disappear Here, Bad Suns tackle a part of life that is so different for each and every person, in a way that makes us all feel something. With new single, "This Was a Home Once", the L.A. four-piece reflect on growing up and the inevitable changes in family dynamics as we get older, through a keen return to the group's always recognizable sound.

The band are extremely vulnerable and candid on this release, with some of their most explicit storytelling yet. Revisiting childhood is often hard to process, which is shown beautifully through the variety in the lyrics, down to the very way they are enunciated. Vocalist Christo Bowman goes from bluntly announcing "I guess the dog is now dead", to almost whispering the next line, "My little sister in heels". His voice is as emotional as ever, especially as he liberates lines like the strong "I've been waiting for this moment for 13 years", or the desperate plea "Can I say something to change your mind?".

It's no secret that Bad Suns have one of those sounds where the listener immediately knows it's them. Fans will not be disappointed by this single, because the four-piece's flourishing, innovative, and rhythm-section-heavy sound has not been forgotten, but rather upgraded to mesh with the subject matter of the song. Still deeply rooted in the carefully cultivated style that shines on their first two LPs, this single features more keyboard work, a moderate tempo, and a sweeping, atmospheric chorus that truly allows the listener to feel what the song is trying to portray. Gavin Bennett's drawing bass lines, Miles Morris' steady percussion, and Ray Libby's familiar guitar tone tie everything together, creating a dazzling return to the band we know and love.
