Vancouver-based singer-songwriter Chris Ho finds hope in heartbreak in new single "Borrowed Books."

An ended relationship can often feel like a disorienting loss of direction, as you attempt to readjust to your life without that person. In his new single "Borrowed Books" [2 July 2021], Chris Ho thoughtfully explores this period of transition after a relationship ends, weaving a process of transformation from self-reflection to acceptance to hope.

Whether it was a platonic or romantic connection, having someone walk out of your life is never easy, and Ho illustrates this by opening the song with a somber tone. An atmospheric and echoey instrumental haunts the track as he struggles to stay afloat "under [the] spell" of the person who left. Although he seems resigned to the inevitable, Ho can't help but ask the eternal question, "If I try to stop / Holding on to this / Would it lead me back to you?"

As the song progresses, intricate guitar dances warmly around the words while Ho eventually builds up to the realization that even though "It's true my love for you will always stay," he can also make the most of the cards he's been dealt. The instrumental swells with promise as he learns to trust his life without the person he once depended on.

Though life might not make sense a lot of the time, "Borrowed Books" shows that everything happens for a reason and that a little faith will bring a lot of peace. Maybe life will find a way to bring that person back to you, but if not, that doesn't erase the impact that they made. In this new single, Chris Ho lures us into a world where we can gracefully embrace a new phase of life and feel at home in the unknown.
