DISCOVER // "Cul De Sac" [single] by PHANGS

It's not always easy for an artist to live up to online hype. I'd seen buzz about PHANGS on Twitter, and when I finally gave a listen to the new artist's single, "Cul De Sac" a few weeks ago, my expectations were more than exceeded. With just the right blend of refreshing, dreamy indie pop, paired with an aesthetically pleasing online presence and album artwork, it's impossible for PHANGS to not gain rightfully deserved attention.

PHANGS is the newest project from Nashville musician, Jake Germany. Germany has been in a few bands in the past, most recently with Cardboard Kids, but as stated in this interview with Atwood Magazine, he wanted to do something that explores more of the influences from his own personal experiences from his youth.

If I had to describe PHANGS in one word, it would be intriguing. "Cul De Sac" is a song you can listen to on repeat, and yet always be wanting more. It leaves you wondering what will come next. Germany's falsetto is addictive, floating softly over the beachy synths and solid drum beat. The song peaks interest by feeling fresh and new, yet also nostalgic through its 90's dance-pop sound. At the heart of "Cul De Sac"'s nostalgia is the story it tells. Young love is described by Germany as he sings "No matter what comes through / You know I'll stay beside you", "Just a kid, who could've known that / You would be the one for me?", and "Every breath from you was my soundtrack". The song manages to perfectly paint a young relationship, while the dreamy synths and vocals add infinite colour.

PHANGS is a very new artist, but Germany himself has been in the industry for a while. This makes PHANGS a new artist with incredible potential, and one that you absolutely need to check out. If "Cul De Sac" leaves you intrigued, you're in luck. New single, "One & Lonely" was just released last Friday. Add these songs to your playlist, and be sure to watch out for PHANGS this year!
