FAVOURITE // "Talk Too Much" [song] by COIN

Around half a year ago, my favourite band finally came out with a new single. After meeting at college in Nashville, releasing a few EPs and a perfectly summery indie debut self-titled album, COIN has burst back onto the alternative scene in a big way. Although this album was very strong by the books, after around a year since its release, the young band yearns to create something all their own. "Talk Too Much" is a slightly new direction for the band, but the catchy chorus and memorable guitar solos are more than enough to delight old fans and attract many new ones.

The song jumps immediately into the funky guitar riff that acts as the outline for most of the song. This song fosters the same upbeat, dance-along, sing-at-the-top-of-your-lungs sound of many of their older songs, but slowed down to a more 80's new wave tempo. "Talk Too Much" grows larger as the song goes on, and gets better each time you listen to it. Layers of drum and bass fly in and out underneath Joe Memmel's irresistible lead guitar lines, while Chase Lawrence's vocals boast a newfound edginess, but are still smooth as always. All together, this song is surprisingly much more musically mature than the band's debut, but still holds onto the familiar.

Possibly one of the most captivating parts of the song is the message it portrays. Telling the three minute story of a protagonist in an awkward social situation, it's a narrative that we've all experienced. The song starts right off with "Caffeine, small talk / Wait out the plastic weather / Mmhmm, uh uh / Discussing current events", builds up with "Why can't I leave it unsaid?" and packs a punch as the chorus explodes into "You know I talk too much / Honey come put your lips on mine and shut me up". At a first glance, the song seems cute and relatable, but with a closer look, it becomes more and more evident that the song is really about COIN trying to create their own sound and differ away from the synth-driven world that popular alternative has become. Lines like "Tightrope across the table", "New wave, no time", and "No hesitation, what are we waiting for?" help illustrate the jittery double meaning behind this seemingly innocent tune. COIN fans are in for something new, and soon.

COIN have been trying to break away from their squeaky clean debut, and it's paying off. The young indie pop/rock band are finally reaching the alternative chart popularity that they deserve, reaching the number one spot on Sirius XM Alt Nation's Alt 18 Countdown for the fourth consecutive week. They've also been recruited by one of my other favourites, Bad Suns, as the opening act for their current North American tour, following the release of their sophomore album, Disappear Here. In addition, they've got two shows lined up in Tennessee and Florida, opening for alternative legends, The 1975.

I've been obsessed with this song since the day it came out. I've loved this band for over a year, and it's so exciting to see them come into their own with "Talk Too Much". COIN have packed all this feeling and jitteriness into something that's really casual and easy to get behind, which could be the reason why this song is beginning to pick up popularity. "Talk Too Much" only shows that the best is yet to come for COIN.
